In this podcast Professor Stephen Stradling talks to James Luckhurst of Drive Smarter about the ways of implementing a safe driving culture:

  • "If want to change someone’s behaviour, you can try to change the person or the system under which they operate,” explains Stephen. “The system is set in place by the employer, it’s the organisational culture. So, for example, the ‘finish and go’ – or ‘job and knock – culture means the faster you go, the quicker you finish. So it rewards a culture it shouldn’t be rewarding."

  • There may well be some resistance when you introduce a safer way of doing things. After all, people are often uncomfortable with an sort of change to the way they do things. But it helps if you can reward virtue, even in small ways. That sends the message that we value safe driving.”

For HSE and Fleet Professionals:

  • Back up your organisation’s safety culture with accessible information on speed limits, vehicle maintenance, impairment and fatigue
  • Offer information on the sort of accidents common in your organisation, along with the typical causes and effects.
  • Demonstrate practical ways of following up incidents and accidents

For Your Employees:

  • Understand the sort of risks – and the level of risk – you face when on work journeys.
  • Make a pledge not to put yourself – or others – at risk.
  • Make a pledge to co-operate with your organisation’s policies and procedures, to ensure you are as safe as possible.
